HSENI To Help Stop Carnage On Farms
The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) is launching a Help initiative which will focus its attention of farm safety.
Each month last year a farmer was killed while working on a farm.
During February and March the initiative will entail HSENI staff visiting farms and speaking directly with farmers and their families about how the HSENI can ensure their safety and help prevent injury and death.
Ken Logan, Acting Deputy Chief Executive, speaking directly to farmers said: "With the full support of the DARD and UFU, HSENI staff will be visiting your farm in order to discuss the dangers that you and your families face on a daily basis.
"Given that most Northern Ireland farms are worked by one or two people, this is a very personal message to you. Safety must be your number one priority as it is likely to be you or another family member who gets injured or killed. This Help Initiative will provide you with an opportunity to ask questions and seek advice from my colleagues. Please co-operate and help make our farms safer."

Campaign Highlights Dangers On Farms
In the last 11 years, 29 farmers aged 65 years or over have been killed in farms in Northern Ireland. HSENI, in partnership with the Ulster Farmers' Union have therefore developed a campaign to raise awareness of the main issues facing older farmers.

Corporate Manslaughter Conviction First
JMW Farms Limited (Co. Armagh) was fined a record £187,500, plus £13,000 costs, at Belfast's Laganside Crown Court for health and safety failings that led to the death of 45-year-old employee Robert Wilson. The company is the first in Northern Ireland to be convicted under new Corporate Manslaughter legislation.

North-South Fire Safety Week launched
A joint north-south Fire Safety Week has been launched today by the Northern Ireland Fire Brigade and the Republic of Ireland’s National Safety Council. ‘Fire, Our Community at Risk’ aims to raise public awareness of fire safety issues, and in particular, the higher risk to the very young and elderly people living alone.
