Pharmaceutical company to recruit 195 people in Sligo

Abbott Laboratories has concluded negotiations with IDA Ireland for a €55 million investment to establish a major new pharmaceuticals manufacturing facility in Sligo, which is set to employ 195 people.

This is the first Abbott facility in Ireland specifically devoted to pharmaceuticals, although the company has a Dublin-based distribution company and five important facilities around Sligo, Donegal and Cootehill, County Cavan, employing between them almost 1,700 people in the production of a range of medical devices, diagnostic and nutritional products.

The new facilities will be a centre of excellence for the Abbott organisation and will be of strategic importance to the company worldwide.

It is thought that Abbott will be a major contributor to the region’s economic development, having a wage bill alone of around € 35 million and an annual Irish economy expenditure of around € 50 million. The investment also follows on the announcement in March this year of a € 63.5 million IDA-backed investment by Abbott in their Donegal town facility, updating the facility and securing a future for its 550 employees.
