Walkers’ car parks boost farming income in Mourne area
The Mourne Heritage Trust is going ahead with an initiative into dealing with the increasing number of cars being broken into in isolated car parks.
The increasing number of people visiting the area by car has also created problems over parking space, sometimes blocking narrow roads.
However, the Trust has so far encouraged three local farmers to provide parking and facilities in their farmyards.
The positive aspects of the new scheme ensure that cars parked in the farm yards are under constant supervision with the welcome addition of public toilets and showers.
With an average charge of around £3 everyday the new facilities seem to be going down well with visitors
The new idea is being welcomed by farmers as a means of diversifying their income with the recent crisis in hill farms with average annual salaries dropping to as little as £5,000 and below.
