NI Bankruptcy Soars

It has been revealed that more than four people a day have declared themselves bankrupt in Northern Ireland since April.

According to a statement by Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster during the financial year from April to January 10 there have been 1,164 bankruptcies. That compares to 906 in 2007/8.

The Minister said that those filing for bankruptcy range from homeowners to large property developers who owe in the region of £100m.

It is understood that the main reason for this is relief of debt and stress and more and more people are viewing bankruptcy as the way out of sticky financial situations.
