O’Briens sandwiches poised to eat into Northern market
A Dublin-based sandwich franchise has announced plans to open 20 outlets throughout the province, in a move that will create up to 200 news jobs over the next five years.
The announcement by the sandwich chain coincided with the opening of a new outlet, at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, to be operated by local businessman Adrian Garvey.
Mr Garvey opened his first O’Briens outlet in Belfast city centre 18 months ago and has recently recorded a 42 per cent increase in sales.
Joining forces with his brother Damien in Mr Garvey’s second venture to form the Northern Ireland development agency for O’Briens, the pair plan to attract new franchises and open an additional 20 sandwich bars around Northern Ireland, in a £10 million investment over the next five years.
Commenting on the new outlet at Jordanstown, Adrian Garvey said: “This is the first time there has been a modern café on the campus as only canteen catering was provided in the past. And with more than 15,000 students and staff on site we are confident that the O’Briens offering will prove to be a hit in this burgeoning academic area.”
The pair are employing 10 staff at the brand new campus facility, which is part of a major £20 million development including new research facilities and sporting complex.
