Fresh violence erupts in north Belfast
Three police officers have been injured during fresh clashes between republicans and loyalists in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast.
Each side has blamed the other for starting the trouble on Thursday night, which saw bricks, bottles and stones being thrown, and numerous gangs engaging in hand-to-hand fighting. The RUC fired three plastic bullets during the skirmishes which ended around 3am.
At Twaddell Avenue, Protestant residents said they came under attack from gangs of men from the nearby mainly nationalist Ardoyne. However, republican sources said loyalists had started the trouble.
The security forces, which came under attack from both sides, remained on high alert in the area throughout the night.
Meanwhile, the nationalist SDLP has called on the police to step up their efforts to prevent sectarian attacks in north Belfast. Loyalist pipe bomb attacks have become an almost nightly occurrence in the flashpoint area of north Belfast.
The SDLP call came after the latest event in which five people, including three children, escaped injury in a pipe bomb attack in north Belfast early on Thursday morning.
Most of the families targeted with pipe bombs and other crude devices have been Catholic.
A SDLP party delegation, including Alex Attwood and Belfast councillor Margaret Walsh, whose house has been repeatedly attacked by loyalists, met senior police chiefs in Belfast on Friday afternoon.
Speaking on Friday afternoon Mr Attwood said: “People understand that the police are stretched in certain areas but people will only support the police if they are seen as fully supporting the communities in the north and to date that has not adequately been the perception or the reality.”
