Tohill to captain Ireland in Australia

Derry midfielder and captain Anthony Tohill has been named as Ireland captain for October's Gaelic football international rules trip to Australia.

Tohill, who skippers his county side, takes over the captaincy from Trevor Giles who wore the armband in last year's two games against the Aussies at Croke Park in Dublin.

The Derry midfielder has been an influential part of the Irish team for the last three international rules series against the Australians.

Former Donegal boss Brian McEniff will once again manage the Irish squad who are to be sponsored by Coca-Cola.

Tohill, who is the first Ulster footballer to be named Irish captain, said that he was asked two weeks ago to captain the Ireland Gaelic Football squad.

Speaking of his appointment Tohill said: "I am delighted the manager has put his faith in me.” He also said that he was greatly honoured and humbled to be captain and that he aimed to reverse last years disappointing 2-0 defeat against the Aussies in Croke Park.

McEniff has named 46 players in a preliminary training squad which will then be whittled down to a final 26 to go forward and play in Melbourne and Adelaide October 12 and 19 2001. (AMcE)
