Social Housing Project Boosts Builders

There was a pre-Christmas boost on housing this week with the keys being handed over to residents in one of Northern Ireland's biggest social housing developments to date.

Located in south Belfast, the newly completed 42 houses and apartments are the latest phase of a flagship development by Clanmil Housing on the site of the former North Rugby and Cricket Ground on the Ormeau Road.

Part of a scheme that continues to aid the hard-pressed building sector, the Lavinia housing scheme now provides a total of 166 high quality social houses for families and singles, with a final 12 planned to start construction within the next few months.

NI Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland (pictured) said: "I am delighted to be here to hand over the keys for the latest phase of this prestigious development."

He added that the work had boosted prospects in the beleaguered construction sector too: "In these difficult times, this is good news not only for these new residents but also for those working in construction."

Minister McCausland continued: "The building of 178 new homes in such a central location on one site is a magnificent achievement and represents one of the largest social housing developments to have been undertaken in Northern Ireland for many years.

"Investing in social housing has strong multiplier effects in terms of employment. Research has shown that for every 10 jobs created by building social housing seven other jobs will be created or sustained elsewhere in the wider economy."

All the new homes have been built to high energy and high design specifications, including Lifetime Homes and Secured by Design accreditation, which ensures added security for tenants and flexibility of adaptation if required at a later date.

The Minister viewed plans of the overall scheme layout and praised those who had helped bring the £24m scheme to fruition.

The Minister said: "The partnership approach between Clanmil Housing, the Housing Executive and particularly the involvement of the local community really has paid dividends here.

"This new development is playing a vital part in the overall regeneration of this part of the city and is helping underpin a much more sustainable future for local people," the DUP Minister concluded.
