DOE invites comments on future of small unit housing
The Department of the Environment (DoE) has issued an invitation for comments relating to a newly published draft Advice Notice regarding the future of small unit housing.
The document, which is set to supersede the previous edition produced in 1987, aims to give general guidance to intending developers and to the general public regarding the planning criteria to be applied when an application for small unit housing is being considered. Such guidance may be taken into account as a material consideration in the determination of planning applications.
Hilary Heslip of the Planning Service explained: "We want to provide supplementary planning guidance which aims to ensure that any proposals for small unit housing within existing urban areas, be it in cities or in towns, in villages or small settlements, maintain high levels of urban and environmental quality.
"Small unit housing can arise through the conversion of houses into flats, extension of houses, demolition and redevelopment, together with apartment, infill and backland development. This Development Control Advice Note provides practical advice on how matters of detailed design are best handled in relation to small unit housing, so as to create attractive and sustainable residential environments."
A copy of this draft DCAN No. 8 can be obtained from Planning Service Headquarters and comments should be forwarded to Ms Heslip at Planning Service Headquarters no later than Friday 28 September. (CL)
