Benefit Fraudsters Pay The Penalty
Both a jail sentence and fines have been handed down to benefit fraudsters across NI.
Two people were convicted at Newry Magistrates Court (pictured) on Monday for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.
Gary Thompson (41) of Hill Street, Gilford was given a three-month prison sentence suspended for two years for wrongful encashment of Jobseekers Allowance and Income Support totalling £381.
Brian Hale (41) of Rathview, Banbridge claimed Disability Living Allowance totalling £2,339 while exaggerating his disability. He was given 240 hours community service.
Hale has repaid in full the money he wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
Elsewhere, two more people were convicted at Antrim Magistrates court on similar charges.
Matthew O'Sullivan (31) of Tesna Park, Randalstown claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £4,236 while failing to declare employment. He was fined £750 and ordered to pay court costs of £55.
Timothy Knocker (27) of Tiree Street, Antrim claimed Jobseekers Allowance totalling £3,177 while failing to declare employment. He was fine £1,200 and ordered to pay court costs of £28.
A Newtownabbey woman was also convicted this week at Belfast Crown court for claiming benefits she was not entitled to.
Lynn Atcheson (27) of Elmfield Crescent, claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £32,953 while failing to declare employment. She was given 125 hours community service.
All will also have to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

A man was convicted at Belfast Magistrates' court on Wednesday for claiming benefits he was not entitled to. Raymond Crooks, 52, of Bentinck Street, Belfast was given three months imprisonment suspended for two years and ordered to pay court costs of £22 for wrongful encashment of Employment Support Allowance totalling £173.

Michael Benson (24) of Bonds Hill, L'Derry claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £4,682 while failing to declare employment. He was given 120 hours Community Service, fined £100 and ordered to pay court costs of £43.

Two people have been handed down prison sentences for separate cases of benefit fraud. A woman was convicted at Dungannon Magistrates' court earlier this week for claiming benefits she was not entitled to. She is Mary Campbell, 52, of Loughview Gardens, Coalisland, Co Tyrone.

Three benefit frauds from across NI have been handed down gaol sentences for defrauding the Government of money to which they were not entitled. James Logue (45) of Main Street, Castlederg was convicted at Strabane Magistrates' court after he claimed Housing Benefit totalling £2,057 by making a false statement of occupation.
