Empey highlights importance of enterprise economy
Minister for Enterprise, Sir Reg Empey, has highlighted the importance of an enterprise economy at the official opening of an extension to a concrete plant in Ballymena.
Speaking at the opening of the £750,000 extension to the premises of Moore Concrete in Ballymena, Sir Reg said: “New high tech industries attract a great deal of attention, but our traditional sectors have a crucial role to play in ensuring that the Northern Ireland economy is both balanced and stable.
“It cannot be emphasised enough how important small businesses are to the economy of Northern Ireland. Particularly those companies which are competitive externally and are bringing their products and services to wider markets beyond these shores. Companies like Moore Concrete, which rely on traditional skills, are an important element in our economic mix.
“We must encourage more of our talented people with business ideas to take them forward and help our's to become a truly entrepreneurial society. Role models like Wilbert Moore will help persuade them that starting a business can be a worthwhile and rewarding challenge.”
Moore Concrete, which was formed 20 years ago by Wilbert Moore, now employs 42 people in the production of pre-cast concrete products for the agricultural and construction industries. Currently it exports around 30 per cent of its output to customers throughout Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.
The LEDU-backed investment includes a 14,000 sq ft extension which houses new computer operated systems including handling and storage facilities, concrete mixer and concrete distribution system. These new facilities will allow the company to double its output over the next five years. (GB)
