Northern Ireland’s under-16 footballers are ahead of the game

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Jim Rodgers formally congratulated two of Northern Ireland’s young soccer teams on their success in fighting off stiff competition and winning a prestigious European football competition.

Both the Northern Ireland under-16 boy and girl teams returned home as champions from the recent 16-nation Holland Cup tournament, held in Amsterdam at the end of July.

The Mayor of Belfast said: “The achievement of these youngsters was absolutely magnificent. For not just one, but both of the teams to bring home their respective cups is an achievement of which all the people of Northern Ireland should feel justifiably proud.

“Both teams showed that they are magnificent ambassadors for the Province, and that they are carrying on the proud sporting tradition of our tiny country, putting it on a pedestal alongside all the other great names in the sport.”

He added: “There is no doubt that, with successes such as the Holland Cup and the youth development programme currently being developed by the Irish Football Association, the future of Northern Ireland soccer is in good hands.”
