NI sides face up to UEFA Cup test

Thursday evening is a big night for local football as Glenavon and Glentoran represent Northern Ireland in the UEFA Cup.

The most interesting tie will take place in Lurgan as Glenavon face Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock.

The Lurgan men will field new club captain Gerard McMahon who will be of special interest to the visitors after his days with St Johnstone.

Although the Scottish side go into the first leg as favourites Glenavon have still every chance to win the game. They only have to look back to 1971, when Coleraine dumped the Rugby Park side out of the contest at the first hurdle with a 1-1 draw at home followed by a shock 3-2 win in Ayrshire.

Glentoran meanwhile face FC Midjylland in Denmark, hoping become the first side from the Irish league to make progress in Europe since 1995.

While the Glentoran squad arrived in Denmark on Tuesday night, manager Roy Coyle travelled to Scandinavia a few days earlier in order to watch his sides Thursday night’s opponents against FC Copenhagen.

While Glentoran have played numerous European ties over the years, this will be the Danes first game in European competition. (MB)
