NI teams prove their UEFA Cup credentials
Glenavon and Glentoran give an impressive account of themselves in Thursday night’s UEFA Cup preliminary round ties to leave both teams in with a chance of reaching the first round proper.
Glentoran come away from Denmark on the back of a 1-1 draw with FC Midjylland after some heroic defending and an important second half goal from new boy Mark Glendinning. With the Glentoran defence in danger of being overrun in the first half, the defenders managed to restrict the Danish side to 15th minute goal by Ghanian international Razar Pimpong.
However, the second half told a different story as the Belfast men got in amongst the home side before that all important equaliser by Glendinning in the 83rd minute.
The Glens now have every chance of progressing into the next round when FC Midjylland visit The Oval on August 23.
Glenavon meanwhile were unlucky not to salvage a draw at Mournview Park after an injury time goal from Kilmarnock’s Chris Innes sealed the fate of the Lurgan side. The goal gives the Scottish Premier League team a precious lead to take back to Rugby Park for the second leg on August 23.
Glenavon had looked like holding on for a draw until Innes' late header after a spell of persistent attacking play by the visitors paid off.
The Lurgan Blues now have to travel to Scotland for the return leg and achieve a win if they are to reach the UEFA Cup first round proper. (MB)
