Report shows Northern Ireland teens top drug abuse table

A new health report published this week shows shocking statistics that more children in Northern Ireland abuse solvents than anywhere else in the UK.

The new research published on Monday August 13 by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety illustrates the extent of drinking, smoking and drug use amongst 71 secondary school students in Northern Ireland.

The results show that over two thirds of both girls and boys had consumed alcohol in the last 30 days, and of this number, one fifth were daily smokers.

A staggering 40 per cent of boys and 30 per cent of girls had used drugs, mainly cannabis, solvents and ecstasy.

However, the reported use of injected drug use, like heroin, was considerably lower than that of their UK counterparts with results showing 2-3 per cent usage by both girls and boys.

The research was conducted between March and June in 1999 and involved 700 pupils from 71 secondary schools completing a standardised questionnaire under exam conditions. (AMcE)
