Police launch murder inquiry after body found in west Belfast

The police have begun a murder investigation after a man's body was found in west Belfast.

The body of the man, named as David McDowell (34) from Battenburg Street, was discovered on a footpath at the junction of Lanark Way and the Shankill Road at about 4.30am on Thursday.

North Belfast assembly member Billy Hutchinson, of the Progressive Unionist Party, said Mr McDowell was from the Shankill area and was a “quiet unassuming man”.

It is understood he had suffered serious head wounds. A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on the body.

Forensic scientists are examining the scene and a large section of the Shankill Road has been cordoned off between Tennant Street and Ainsworth Avenue.

The RUC have set up an incident room at North Queen Street and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

They are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who was in the area where the man's body was found between 3.30am and 4.40am on Thursday. (AMcE)
