Local businesses gain from benefits of on-line directory

Newtownabbey Borough recently opened their doors to global trading opportunities thanks to a new on-line business directory at www.newtownabbey.gov.uk.

From specialised clothing for fire fighters, to training services and data management, the directory aims to reflect the diversity of business life in the Newtownabbey area.

The new service, which was initiated and developed by Newtownabbey Borough Council and local technology provider, Sx3, replaces the standard printed version.

The on-line directory offers local businesses the opportunity to gain from the benefits of e-commerce, and the launch follows on from Newtownabbey Council’s success in winning the National 2001 SPIN-SOCITM Local Authority website award for Northern Ireland.

In addition to offering a free marketing and promotion service to its business members, the on-line directory also opens up a wealth of trading and development opportunities.

An important feature of the site is the provision of an ‘interest group’ service. By recording specialist information, the site can profile its customer base and target specific details and information to relevant members.

Alan Braithwaite, Economic Development Officer of Newtownabbey Borough Council says he has been overwhelmed by the response from local businesses. “As it is a free service and is all encompassing, the site offers a level playing field to all businesses within the Newtownabbey area, irrespective of size.

“Companies, which do not have their own website, view membership of the directory as a cost effective business development tool. And those which already have an existing website can set up link to the directory, ensuring they do not miss out on any commercial opportunity.”

The project has been managed and implemented by Sx3, which now employs over 1400 people in the IT products and services arena. (MB)
