Fujitsu to cut over 16,000 jobs worldwide

Japanese electronics giant Fujitsu has unveiled a restructuring plan to cut 16,400 jobs worldwide which threatens hundreds of UK workers.

Fujitsu owns a number of companies in Northern Ireland including the software company Kainos which is based in Belfast.

The job cuts also have implications for ICL, Fujitisu’s UK subsidiary, which was once the country’s most important computer maker. Estimates put the job losses at around 1,400 posts across Fujitsu's European operations.

In the UK, Fujitsu has a number of bases including ICL which employs half of its 19,000 workforce in the UK.

The cuts follow the company’s £1.25 billion loss for the quarter to June this year, although the company had warned that it would make a loss during its current financial year and added that it planned to take a £1.73 billion hit from the latest restructuring programme.

Fujitsu will eliminate around 5,000 posts in Japan, with another 3,000 posts set to go in North America.

ICL, which underwent restructuring last year, is due to be brought under the Fujitsu brand early next year.

ICL has key operations in Edinburgh, Manchester, Warrington and Cheshire. (CD)
