Planning permission given for new Market Quarter development
Planning permission has been granted for the construction of a new landmark building in Belfast’s Market Quarter.
Property developers, Teesland Ireland have been granted the permission, which will include a new four storey building on the corner of East Bridge Street and Cromac Square.
The new structure will include a number of retail units at street level while the upper levels will accommodate modern business offices. Work is expected to begin in September by contractors H&J Martin.
The new building, to be called Aberdeen Buildings, marks the second phase of a £20 million Market Quarter re-development by Teesland Ireland.
In June, a three-storey building adjacent to the historic St George’s Market was completed. Next month sees the opening of the new bar EAST on the ground floor of the building while an announcement is expected in regard to the upper levels of the site. (MB)

NI Builders Facing Deepening Crisis
There has been a continuing downturn in the NI construction sector as builders in Northern Ireland struggle to manage the recession. Even before this week's Comprehensive Spending Review and expected cutbacks in Executive spending on new building projects, the latest figures have showed a 5.7% decrease in output during the past quarter.

New Defective Premises Bill To Protect NI Homeowners
A new Defective Premises Bill to give NI homeowners the same protections as those in England and Wales, has been introduced by Communities Minister, Gordon Lyons. The Bill establishes a retrospective period of up to 30 years and a prospective period of up to 15 years in which a party can take action on defective premises.

NI Cancer Charity Gets 'Nationwide' Boost
A top Northern Ireland cancer charity is to get support from a major financial institution. The Nationwide Building Society has teamed up with leading local cancer charity, the Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) in a bid to raise £50,000 to help fund a major new support programme for cancer patients and their families in Northern Ireland.
