NI Supergroup Prepares For Barge Debut
NI super group The Salt Flats has announced a second EP and a debut live performance tonight as part of the Belfast Festival at Queen's.
Composed of Katie Richardson of Katy and the Carnival and former The Delawares fame, solo artist Cara Cowan, former Skibunny Mark Gordon and Ewan Gordon of Coney Island Sound, the band have put together a special EP of Fleetwood Mac covers.
All four songs are pieced together with vocal harmonies and an "experimental" approach, with the four-piece enlisting drum machines, Omnichords, Harmonium drones and Eastern reed instruments to rethink their Fleetwood Mac inspiration.
A band spokesman said: "When we started to think about songs for a new EP, some more unusual candidates started to appear on the shortlist. So whilst recording some demos we thought it could be interesting to work on several by the same artist, trying slightly different approaches with each song.
"We'd already tried a Fleetwood Mac song, originally sung by Lindsey Buckingham, but we realized that the combination of Katie and Cara's vocals would be a good starting point for trying more."
The release will be supported by a debut live performance by the band who are helping curate a night for The Belfast Festival at Queen's on Friday (21 October).
So far, the event features a debut Irish performance by Minotaur Shock, Colly Strings, DJ Tony Wright (formally of ASIWYFA and now recording as Verse Chorus Verse) with visuals by film director Darren Lee, and a debut full-band performance by The Salt Flats. The event takes place on The Barge - and is a 'bring your own' event - with full information available from www.belfastfestival.com.
