Donegal Teen Dies From Injuries In Derry

A teenager from Donegal, who was discovered unconscious outside a pub in Londonderry at the weekend, has died from head injuries.

Nineteen year-old Caolan Page from the village of Carrigans, was discovered unconscious outside a licensed premises in Derry in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He was taken to Altnagelvin hospital in the city in a critical condition, but the police announced his death on Sunday.

The details around how the fatal incident occurred and how Mr Page sustained the head injuries have not yet been released - although it is now known that the police were not informed until over six hours after he was injured.

Local MLA Mark H Durkan has been speaking to some of Caolan's friends and told UTV news they are "heartbroken" by the news.

PSNI detectives are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and speaking to a number of eyewitness accounts from people in the area.

The dead teenager was an A-level student at St Columb's College in the Maiden City and it has been reported, wanted to become a vet.

At this stage, one line of inquiry is that he was attacked while another is that he fell from the city walls.

A post mortem is due to be carried out on Monday while it also emerged that the PSNI has obtained CCTV images from the surrounding area and are studying footage to determine what happened.

A police spokesperson said: "Detectives are still very interested in talking to anyone who may have information about the incident," and are also keen to speak to people who saw a man collapsed in Magazine Street around 2am on Saturday.

"We are seeking anyone who was in the Waterloo Place area around the same time or who came into contact with Caolan at any time during the evening to come forward."

The full PSNI statement reads: "Caolan was found collapsed in the Magazine Street area of the city around 2am on Saturday morning. Police have obtained CCTV images from the surrounding area and are studying footage to determine what happened.

"While these lines of enquiry are being progressed, detectives are still very interested in talking to anyone who may have information about the incident.

"Police are particularly keen to speak to people who saw a man collapsed in Magazine Street around 2am on Saturday or who were in the Waterloo Place area around the same time or who came into contact with Caolan, who was from Carrigans in Co Donegal, at any time during the evening.

"Police were contacted at 8.35am on Saturday morning and made aware that Caolan had been taken to hospital with a head injury.

"Police immediately liaised with ambulance control to establish the details and are continuing to investigate this incident.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at Strand Road on 0845 600 8000. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111," the statement concluded.
