Mother’s joy as lost son turns up in Colombia

An Irish mother has expressed unreserved joy at the news that her son has turned up in Colombia.

Her son, Kevin Crennan (37), who has been missing for more than seven years, turned up alive and well when Colombian authorities arrested him near to the area controlled by FARC rebels.

Mary Crennan, speaking to the BBC, said that her son was a “wanderer”. Mrs Crennan said: "I sort of knew all along that he would be well able to take care of himself and that he was okay. But we wondered why he was not contacting us."

Police say that there is no link between Mr Crennan and the three-suspect IRA members being held in the Colombian capital Bogota.

Colombian immigration officials said Mr Crennan from Abbeyleix in the Republic of Ireland is to be deported for failing to hold a valid visa.

It is understood that the Colombian authorities have been looking for a fourth suspect. However, while Mr Crennan holds a legal passport, he has no visa and is to be deported.

Earlier this month, Colombian security forces detained James Monaghan, Martin McCauley, and Niall Connolly at Bogota airport on August 11.

The three men have been charged with holding false passports, and it is understood that the authorities are considering further charges as the investigation continues. (SP)
