Microsoft Windows XP lined up for October release
Microsoft is expected to begin supplying its controversial new computer-operating system, Windows XP, to PC manufacturers from Friday.
The new software promises a new look for the Windows operating system, which consumers will be able to purchase from October 25, and will come either pre-installed with a PC or separately through an upgrade product at retail outlets.
Prices for the new software have been put at £68.50 for upgrade versions of the Home Edition, while a standard version is expected to cost around £140.
However, its development has been rocked by a series of controversial aspects of the constituent components as well as the ongoing anti-trust trial with the US government.
The new software, which is expected to incorporate internet technology more fully, has been the source of recent controversy.
Some consumers and advocates of computer privacy are concerned that the use of so-called "smart tags" could connect systems to the internet without the owner's permission. (MB)
