First Trust Bank announces £10m investment in branch network
The First Trust Bank has announced a £10 million investment in its branch network over the next three years, including a £3 million super branch in Belfast.
The investment will involve a major building and refurbishment programme across First Trust’s network and includes a new state-of-the-art branch at High Street.
The bank, which has 70 branches across Northern Ireland and employs a total of 1,700 people, is investing £2 million in a project combining two branches in Omagh, is to open a new branch at the University of Ulster at Jordanstown, and is to refurbish the Stormont branch.
Kieran Bennett, First Trust’s Head of Retail Banking, said that while some banks had engaged in a process of rationalisation and closing branches, First Trust remained “committed to strengthening its branch network”.
The First Trust Bank has also recently recruited 100 members of staff across its network, bringing the number of employees in Northern Ireland to almost 1,500. (CD)

Northern Bank fined £1.25m for infringing money laundering rules
The Northern Bank has been fined £1,250,000 by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) today for breaches of its money laundering rules. The FSA said that the size of the fine "demonstrates the importance" it attaches to its statutory objective of reducing the chance of regulated firms being used for purposes connected to financial crime.

Pair Arrested Over Counterfeit Car Products
A man and a woman have been arrested in Ballymena, County Antrim as part of investigations into counterfeit car products. During searches at various locations this morning, 21 August, two cars were seized as well as an amount of counterfeit vehicle merchandise. The cars seized were a Porsche and a BMW.

Police have issued advice about the dangers of drinking and driving as thousands of people prepare to take off work for the bank holiday. Last year 4,423 drivers were detected for drink or drugs driving offences, up 1,634 on the previous year.
