RUC officers aid Colombian investigation in Bogota
Two senior RUC officers have flown into Bogota to aid Colombian authorities with their investigation of the three IRA suspects facing terrorist charges.
The officers will support ongoing inquiries by the Colombian authorities into the activities of the three men – Niall Connolly, James Monoghan and Martin McAuley – who were detained at Bogota airport.
It is thought possible that the RUC officers may be permitted to interview the three men who are being held in Colombia’s high-security La Mondelo prison.
There is speculation that the British Government has also sent MI5 agents to Bogota to further assist in the investigation.
Earlier this week the Alliance Party’s Stephen Farry called for the three men to be prosecuted in the UK if Colombian authorities failed to press terrorism charges.
Despite speculation that the men would be deported for passport fraud, Colombian authorities appear to be set on building a case based on more serious charges of terrorism offences. If convicted the men face up to 20 years in jail.
Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams categorically denied that any of the three men were representing Sinn Fein. He said there was “no case to answer” as he had not authorised their trip to Colombia.
Mr Adams is expected to travel to South America as part of an official pre-arranged trip. (SP)

Three men captured in Colombia, allegedly travelling on false British and Irish passports, are IRA members, according to the commander of the Colombian army. A specialist investigative branch of the Colombian Police, known as the Fiscalia, arrested the three men, in Bogotá El Dorado airport on Saturday August 11.

Two Men Attacked With Baseball Bats In Co Antrim
Two 18-year-old men have been attacked with baseball bats in Whitehead, Co Antrim. The victims were closing premises in the Balmoral Avenue area at around 8.30pm on Tuesday, 04 October when three men assaulted them. Both men were treated in hospital for their injuries. One has been discharged, and the other remains in hospital.

Whereabouts of Colombian Three unknown
The whereabouts of three Irishmen cleared of training FARC guerrillas in Colombia is still unknown. Niall Connolly, Martin McCauley and James Monaghan left their Bogota jail on Wednesday six weeks after being acquitted of training right-wing militants over three years ago.

Colombia trial adjourned as evidence rejected
The trial of the three men accused of training FARC guerrillas in Colombia has been adjourned. Judge Jairo Acosta refused to admit documentary evidence that the defence claim is crucial to the case as he adjourned the trail of the three Irishmen until July 28.

Three Irishmen are set to appear in a Colombian court today accused of training left wing guerrillas in the use of explosives and other terrorist techniques. Niall Connolly, Martin McCauley and James Monaghan have been held in custody for almost 18 months following their arrest in connection with alleged training of FARC rebels.
