Funeral of third drugs overdose victim takes place
The funeral of the third young man who died following a drugs overdose at the weekend has taken place.
During the Mass held at St Joseph’s church in Hannahstown on Thursday morning for 22-year-old Eamon McCoubrey, Father Dermot McCaughan said that three young lives had been “swept away in an inescapable tide that they found hard to resist”.
He said Eamon’s parents hoped that young people would learn from the death of their son.
Mr McCoubrey was found dead on Sunday morning after a party in West Belfast. Also found dead on Sunday morning were 20-year-old James O’Connor and 18-year-old Thomas Sterrett.
The three men had attended the same party in West Belfast and preliminary post-mortem results indicated that they died from a lethal combination of prescription drugs and alcohol poisoning.
The funerals of the Mr Sterrett and Mr O’Connor took place on Wednesday August 29.
The deaths are understood to have taken the issue of drugs abuse to the top of the agenda at the next meeting of the Northern Ireland Assembly’s Health Committee. (SP)
