Mobile phone sales fall for the first time
Research group Gartner Dataquest have revealed that global sales of mobile phones have fallen for the first time.
Sales of handsets dropped during the second quarter of this year to 89.76 million units against 97.98 million sold over the same period last year.
Senior Analyst at Garner, Ben Wood, said a number of factors hitting the industry at one time had caused the slide. One of the main factors depressing the sale of handsets was that network operators had decided to stop subsidising handsets.
Other reasons for the drop in sales were attributed to market saturation and consumers who were prepared to wait for the introduction of phones incorporating the latest 3G technology. (CD)
