Overnight disturbances in Belfast resulted in 21 police officers being injured, bringing the number of officer injured on Monday to 35.
Police said the officers were injured on Monday as sporadic street violence erupted throughout North Belfast.
Eight shots were fired at officers, five of these by loyalists in Ardoyne who threw over 90 petrol bombs at police. In the nationalist Limestone Road area three shots were fired at police and around 40 petrol bombs were thrown.
A number of houses were also attacked in the mainly Catholic Newington area a pipe bomb set fire to an oil tank seriously damaging two houses.
Two SDLP councillors for North Belfast condemned the overnight violence. Martin Morgan and Pat Convery said the incidents were a spin-off from the events at the Holy Cross Girls Primary School.
Martin Morgan said that North Belfast had seen little benefit from the economic boom following the peace process and was a “living monument to the troubles”.
He called on all elected representatives and all those in a position of influence within the community to do all they can to “calm the situation”. (SP)
