Trade union membership increases for the second year running

Government figures have revealed that trade union membership has increased for the second year running.

According to the Office for National Statistics, a rise of 46,000 during the past year has brought the number of workers in a trade union up to almost eight million. However these figures are still 1.5 million down from the 1990 figures.

Membership remains strongest in the north-east of England and Wales, while lowest in eastern England.

Trades Union Congress (TUC) General Secretary, John Monks, said that the latest figures showed that the decline throughout the 1980s and most of the 1990s had halted.

He said it demonstrated that unions still remained an important force both in the workplace and in society. (MB)
