House of leading republican is targeted

West Belfast Sinn Féin assembly member Alex Maskey has called for prominent republican Liam Shannon to be placed under RUC protection following an attack on his home in the La Salle Park area of the Falls Road.

Mr Maskey said that at around 12:15am on Thursday night neighbours heard an explosion at the back of Mr Shannon’s house. They discovered a fire that was quickly put out. No one was injured in the attack, which caused scorch damage to the house.

However, Mr Maskey hit out at the RUC for not properly investigating the attack: “When the RUC arrived on the scene they stayed for a couple of minutes and left declaring the attack was a petrol bomb attack.

An RUC spokesperson denied that the incident had not been investigated fully.

It is understood that Mr Shannon who has been targeted on a number of occasions in the past has been turned down for inclusion under the Key Persons Protection Scheme. (SP)
