Belfast Councillors to debate problems at Holy Cross
Ahead of a Belfast City Council debate on Friday on the issues surrounding the protest Alliance Councillor David Alderdice has appealed for those taking part in the debate not to “undermine the progress” made at Holy Cross.
Councillor Alderdice said: “I very much welcome the fact that this morning’s protest was peaceful. A lot of hard work has gone into the background to ensure that children were not harmed on their way to Holy Cross today, but the continuation of the protest indicates that the underlying problems are still there.
“So it is important that tomorrow night’s debate in City Hall shows the kind of leadership so badly needed in Belfast, and I would urge every councillor who attends to work in a spirit of co-operation, not division.”
“We have had enough of the blame game and I believe both protesters and parents have made their point. It is now time for all political and community leaders to come together and discuss in a reasonable manner how we go forward from here.”
The fourth day of the siege of the Catholic school passed off relatively peacefully as loyalist protestors sounded air horns and blew whistles at parents and children attending the school in the loyalist Glenbryn area. (SP)
