Northern Ireland melt Iceland hearts with 3-0 victory
Northern Ireland produced a fabulous second half display of attacking football to beat Iceland 3-0 in Wednesday night’s World Cup qualifying match at Windsor Park.
Although the home side went into the game knowing they would not be going to next year’s World Cup, Sammy McIlroy’s side needed to beat the Icelanders to maintain their current good form which started with a 1-1 draw against Denmark on Saturday in Copenhagen.
Second-half goals from David Healy, Michael Hughes and debutant George McCartney did the trick for McIlroy’s side after a extremely subdued first-half. However, it was Blackburn’s Keith Gillespie who stole the show with some terrific wing play, which eventually led to goals number two and three for Northern Ireland.
Defeat for Iceland, meanwhile, rules out any chance that they had of qualifying for next year’s competition.
Northern Ireland now have only one game left in this qualifying group, against Malta next month, before they turn their attentions towards qualification for the European Championships in 2004 in Portugal. (MB)
