Corus reveals £230m losses for half-year

Steel producer Corus, formerly British Steel, has revealed that company pre-tax losses for the last half-year has hit £230 million.

The steelmaker, which has already cut thousands of jobs this year, said profits had been damaged by continued losses in the company’s carbon steel operations.

However, despite these losses, both its aluminium and stainless steel businesses have made operating profits.

The group, which has been hit by the strong pound and harsh competition, said carbon steel operations had been hit by over-supply in the face of progressive weakening of demand.

The last full results from the combined group were for the extended 15-month period to December 2000 and revealed operating losses of just over £1 billion.

Analysts were looking for a reduction in full year 2001 operating losses to around £350-400 million. (MB)
