Gateway to close operations throughout UK and Ireland
PC manufacturer Gateway has announced plans to close operations throughout the UK and Ireland, which will result in the company’s complete withdrawal from both countries by the end of 2001.
A statement released by Gateway stated that: “Withdrawal from these markets is effective immediately. This decision follows closely behind the closures of its operations in Spain and the Netherlands and more recently, those in Germany, Sweden, Japan and Asia Pacific”.
A pioneer in the build-to-order PC business, Gateway soon expanded to offer a broad range of peripherals, accessories, software products and related services like training, financing, high-speed Internet access and networking solutions for home and business. However, recent poor performance has forced the company to implement an extensive restructuring strategy.
Martin Coles, Senior Vice President for Gateway International added:
"We're accelerating our strategy to deliver personalised technology solutions for our target customers, so we've had to make market-by-market decisions on where we can achieve these goals most effectively."
The company is said to be working closely with a number of partners to aid employees affected by the closure.
Only last month Gateway announced the closure of its Dublin office, which resulted in the axing of 900 jobs. (CL)
