School inspection report welcomed by McGuinness

Education Minister, Martin McGuinness has welcomed the publication of the latest PAC Report on School Inspection in Northern Ireland.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Report is the result of a Public Account Hearing - held on 24 May - to consider the Northern Ireland Audit Office (NIAO) Report, published in August 1999, on School Inspection in Northern Ireland.

While constrained by convention from commenting at length on the Report, Mr McGuinness said that he agreed with the PAC’s conclusion that “school inspection can best contribute to educational standards by ensuring that it is positive, purposeful and integrates more fully with the regular working life of schools”.

The Minister went on to stress the opportunities which the Report would now present as regards the raising of public awareness of this aspect of the Department’s work. He added: “The Inspectorate is my Department’s principal source of advice on all professional educational issues, and I have confidence that their advice is, at all times, objective and well informed.

“Since the NIAO Report was published in 1999, the Inspectorate has, in a number of ways, sought to promote a better understanding, and acceptance of its role, and today’s PAC Report acknowledges this commitment. The Report also welcomes the attention being paid by my Department and the Inspectorate to self-evaluation by schools. (CL
