Road authorities to discuss future of travel information

Road authorities across the British Isles are to join forces on two major projects to investigate ways technology can be used to provide motorists with immediate travel information.

Travel on the Trans European Road Network (TERN) across Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland will be the focus of the STREETWISE project which is due to start this year. Each of the national roads authorities in the UK and Republic of Ireland will be involved in the project, which will also investigate possible links to mainland Europe.

Developing an effective traffic management and information system for cross-border traffic between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland is the main focus of the second project, INSTANT. This project will concentrate on the important Belfast to Dublin road corridor that carries in the region of 18,000 vehicles per day.

Regional Development Minister, Gregory Campbell said: “The overriding vision of both these projects is to improve the flow of traffic and safety across the European roads network by developing a sophisticated traffic information system for the benefit of everyone, from motorists to freight operators.” (CL)
