US bound aircraft remain grounded

Passengers due to fly to America from the UK have been told to contact their airlines as departures were suspended until further notice.

The decision follows the attacks on New York and Washington DC by terrorists on Tuesday.

Emergency measures in the UK have also been tightened including full security checks on all UK flights, while all flights over central London have been banned.

Airports worldwide are also clogged with stranded passengers as flights to the US were halted. On Wednesday, Asia's major airports and airlines were disrupted as airport authorities in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Taiwan and South Korea grounded flights.

At Belfast International Airport flights bound for the United States, including a 747 jumbo jet redirected there, are not scheduled to leave until tomorrow.

However, amid heightened security measures, five Easyjet flights to Britain have been cancelled. Belfast City Airport also revealed the cancellation of four British European flights to London.

America's 15,000 airports look set to remain closed for the remainder of Wednesday. (MB)
