Milk Cup Teen Collapses

A teenager player at the prestigious youth soccer tournament, the Milk Cup - where David Beckham and many other soccer stars made their debut - is being treated in hospital after collapsing while taking part in a match between County Londonderry and Country Antrim on Monday evening.

The under-17 player had to be revived on the pitch in Portstewart before being taken away for further treatment by an ambulance crew to Coleraine hospital.

He was later named as Chris McNeill and was described as being in a stable condition.

Milk Cup spokesperson Jim Sandford praised the emergency response and explained that the game had restarted a short time later at the request of his parents.

"The boy received first-class treatment at the ground from the doctor and also the St John Ambulance staff that were there," said Mr Sandford.

"I understand that seven minutes into the game one of the County Londonderry players collapsed, fortunately in the crowd there was a doctor on hand," he said.

Doctor Michael Healy's son was also playing in the County Derry team with it emerging today that but for the availability of a heart defibrillator, the young man could have died at the scene.
