Work Underway On €19m Galway Sports Facility

Galway-based contractors, JJ Rhatigan & Company is expected to commence construction work imminently on a new €19 million sports facility at the Athlone Institute of Technology in Westmeath.

The facility, designed by Dublin-based architects, OCA Architects will comprise the construction of a two and a half-storey multi-sport facility building consisting of an indoor athletic track and field auditorium with a 200m banked running track and spectator seating for 1,500 persons and an elevated athlete warm up area.

The project also comprises a separate multi-purpose indoor sports auditorium with spectator seating for 1,500 persons, a 500 person outdoor spectator stand overlooking the existing 400m outdoor track and field facility, ancillary accommodation including a 10 changing room facilities to serve the proposed building and the existing adjacent outdoor track and field pitch facilities, gymnasium and high performance training rooms, medical centre and support rooms.

The development also calls for spectator toilets and stores, staff rooms, offices, cafe/restaurant, a 160 space semi basement car parking and surface parking.

A full design team has been engaged. The development which will measure over 17,000 sq.m. and will be located on a 1.86 hectare site is expected to be complete by Summer 2012.
