Sinn Féin faces claims of Fermanagh ‘electoral fraud’
Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has led a party delegation into the High Court in Belfast for a case into allegations of electoral fraud during the British general election in June.
The action is being brought by Ulster Unionist James Cooper, who wants to eject Sinn Fein’s Michelle Gildernew as the MP for Fermanagh-South Tyrone.
Mr Cooper lost the seat to Ms Gildernew by 53 votes in June’s general election.
Mr Cooper announced in June he would be seeking to have the result overturned in a special election court because votes were cast in the polling station in the border village of Garrison after the official closing time of 10 pm.
Mr Cooper insisted that if the invalid votes were disallowed as a result of his court case he would have a majority and would therefore be the lawfully elected MP.
Ms Gildernew is fighting the bid to unseat her and the hearing is expected to last three days.
The case will be heard by the Lord Chief Justice, Sir Robert Carswell and Lord Justice McCollum. They are expected to reserve their decision.
If the court decides in Mr Cooper’s favour, voters will be asked to return to the polling stations for a by-election. (AMcE)
