Mass was held at the Star of the Sea Church, in his home village of Strangford, with the funeral to Roselawn Crematorium at 2.30pm. His distinguished career spanned four decades before he retired earlier this year. Dozens of broadcasting colleagues past and present were in the congregation for the service.
Milk Cup Scores Funds
The NI Tourism Minister Arlene Foster has announced that a one-off funding package is to be provided for this year's Milk and Foyle Cup tournaments following a decision of the NI Executive. The DUP MLA Arlene Foster said: "Together with officials in my department, I have been looking at ways to provide support for this year's Milk Cup and Foyle Cup. My Executive colleagues agree with me that both tournaments have an impact on the areas of tourism, sports development, international relations, as well as children and young people," she said. "With that in mind, I have identified funds within my budget that can be made available for this year to both events in recognition of the broad economic and social impact of these events."
Fraud Fined
A woman was convicted at Coleraine Magistrates' Court for claiming benefits she was not entitled to. Nicola Hunter, 35, of Moneydig Road, Coleraine failed to declare employment while claiming Income Support totalling £3,254. She was given a £150 fine and ordered to pay court costs of £28. Ms Hunter is also required to repay any outstanding money she wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
Food Jobs Lost
Some 40 jobs have been lost at a Northern Ireland meat processor, but administrators for the stricken business are hopeful of finding a buyer who may rehire former workers. Tenderlean, in Derrylin, Co Fermanagh, was bought out of administration in April 2010, but was driven to the wall again this summer as a result of cash flow problems. Administrator Peter Allen of Deloitte said: "There was no funding to trade the business so everybody has been made redundant. There are very serious expressions of interest and we're looking at those at the moment. It's a very good, high-spec facility that can cope with volume. It's very modern and bespoke with very good kit, much of which is financed. It's clean and well kept and the facility has the potential to do something. Management's view would be there were sufficient orders in place to get up to a scale that would have made it fairly profitable, but they didn't have the working capital," he said.
Animal Welfare Consultation
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has launched a consultation on proposed amendments to the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations (WASK). It currently imposes strict limitations on the use of gas to stun and kill poultry. The proposed amendments will permit the use of a wider range of gas mixtures for poultry slaughter where this does not compromise welfare standards and also allow the wider use of gas on farm as a mass culling method for poultry. These amendments will allow the poultry industry here to use cheaper gas mixtures than are currently permitted. By extending the use of gas on farms these amendments also give access to an efficient and effective means of culling flocks in the event of an epizootic disease outbreak. The consultation period ends on 26 September.
