Portadown ‘master plan’ aims to regenerate town
A comprehensive master plan to regenerate the heart of Portadown is being drawn up by leading consultants appointed by the Department for Social Development (DSD).
Local people and organisations are being encouraged to submit their views and input into the plan and to this end, the Department, in conjunction with Craigavon Borough Council, has set up a local steering group to represent a wide range of interests.
The consultation will be led by BDP Planning, who have been appointed by DSD to prepare the plan over a five-month period. The team will be canvassing the views of a wide range of interests including community, business, voluntary sector and statutory agencies.
The plan will concentrate on areas in and around the centre of the town and will take into account the need to regenerate the town centre and developments in the wider urban area. Its specific objectives include the assessment of the potential for riverside development on the Bann and Corcrain rivers, and improved access and upgrading of Portadown Park.
A DSD spokesman said: "This is an exciting opportunity for local people to provide their views on how the town should be developed. We are looking for suggestions which blend vision and pragmatism and which will breathe life into the heart of Portadown.
"A working partnership between government and those who live and work in Portadown is the right approach to ensure that the most is made of the ideas and resources to the benefit of everyone."
The final report is scheduled for presentation to the Department in early 2002. (CL)
