New initiative launched to prevent long-term unemployment
New initiative is being launched by the Training and Employment Agency which aims to provide help to unemployed people at an early stage, in order to prevent any tendency to drift into long-term unemployment.
Starting from 1 October, the initiative, entitled “Focus for Work”, will provide a range of help, including assistance with the techniques of searching for a job, skills development and work experience. Focus for Work will be geared to the individual needs of those who have not yet reached the entry point for the various New Deal opportunities.
Enterprise Ulster will play a key role in the delivery of Focus for Work by piloting the new Training for Work programme, which is designed to improve chances of securing a job through developing and improving skills, motivation and competences.
Joe Cowan, the Chairman of Enterprise Ulster, said: "Enterprise Ulster has many years experience in the field of assisting people back to work. We look forward to utilising this experience to the full in this important new initiative."
The Training for Work programme will replace the existing Enterprise Ulster mainstream programme. The pilot programme will last until 31 March 2004. (CL)

Larne Asda Construction Progressing
Building work on a Co Antrim Asda store is continuing to progress - with piling work already well underway. As the landscape at Redlands in Larne changes to turn the site of the former Ferrymasters depot into a £20 million store, a spokesman for the supermarket giants confirmed that construction work was "progressing well".

Social work training to get new funding scheme
Health Minister, Angela Smith has announced a new funding scheme for students planning to study social work in Northern Ireland from September 2004 onwards. Commenting on the scheme, the Minister said it marked a dramatic milestone in the process of reforming professional social work training.

Around 1,700 new jobs set for Shorts
Around 1,700 new jobs could be created after leading aerospace firm Bombardier announced a £180 million investment programme for its Belfast base at Shorts. The company said it had signed a Letter of Intent with the Government relating to the new "CSeries" family of aircraft which would see part of the aircraft built in Belfast.

New Initiative To Help Older People Get Back Into Work
Belfast City Council has announced a new initiative to help people aged between 50 and 64 get back into employment. The Council will host a free JobStart 50+ Jobs Fair, in partnership with Department for Communities, this Thursday, 29 August from 10am to 1pm at 2 Royal Avenue.
