BT considers further fragmentation of business operations
The demerger of BT’s mobile phone business might be the first in a series of fragmentations that could see the company broken up into an array of separate entities in an attempt to lessen company’s debt burden.
Documents released on Monday 24 September concerning the launch of the mobile phone business – rebranded ‘MM02’ - seem to point to future spin-offs beyond the demerger expected to take place in November.
The name change is set to signal the death of brand variants currently controlled by BT Wireless, including Cellnet and Digifone, which will come under the new moniker of ‘O2’.
It has been suggested that depending on the successful outcome of the spin-off, company chiefs are to consider applying for separate telecoms licences for other units within the parent group. While the demerger is still subject to shareholder approval, if the go-ahead is given, the move will see BT separate into four distinct companies – BT Wholesale, BT openworld, BT Retail and BT Ignite.
However, analysts have suggested that such further fragmentation is likely to be realised in the short term as BT has sustained considerable losses in the last twelve months, thanks to the downward turn in the telecoms sector which saw the value of shares in the industry plummet. (CL)
