Swashbuckling Weekend For Belfast
Belfast is to be 'all at sea' this weekend as the Titanic Maritime Festival, now in its sixth year, sails into the city's docks, offering a weekend of fun for all the family.
Running from Friday through until Sunday, this year's event will be concentrated on the Odyssey side of the River Lagan, along the Queen's Quay into the new Arc public realm at the entrance to the Titanic Quarter.
Among the visiting ships are three classes 'A' tall ships, Bounty, Lord Nelson and Pelican.
The vessels are open to the public throughout the event, so 'step aboard' for an insight into life on the ocean waves, suggested a City hall spokesman.
"One of the highlights will be a thrilling live action sea battle - complete with cannon, musketry and swordplay - as the two beautiful, wooden square-riggers, Zebu and Vilma, re-enact a real life encounter between Queen Grainne's pirate ship and Liverpool privateers on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons," said the spokesman, noting that along the quaysides there will be plenty to keep landlubbers entertained.
He said: "There's a climbing wall and crazy golf, willow weaving, drumming circles and maritime themed arts and crafts as well as some of the best street theatre performers around, from walkabout stilt performers to acrobatic shows and on land synchronised swimming.
"The ever-popular international market also returns with something to please even the most discerning of palates, with delights from Europe and further afield."
There will be a free shuttle bus service on Saturday and Sunday from the city centre to the festival site, operating approximately every 15 minutes, between Chichester Street and Queen's Quay.
In addition, there will be a special shuttle service from the car parks on the Queen's Road to the Odyssey Arena for those attending both the Bryan Adams and JLS concerts over the weekend.
The Belfast Titanic Maritime Festival will be open from 10am - 5pm on Friday, 10am - 7pm on Saturday and 11am - 6pm on Sunday.
