Learndirect facility opens in South Belfast
The Minister for Employment and Learning Dr Sean Farren has officially opened a new Learndirect facility at Rossmore Avenue, Ormeau Road.
The Minister also signed a Memorandum of Understanding between his Department and University for Industry (UFI Ltd) at the launch, which endorses support for Learndirect and covers its activities in Northern Ireland until March 2004.
Speaking at the event Minister Farren said: “This development heralds the arrival of the very latest in technological advances in learning and will help people and businesses to connect with the courses they want in a way and at a time that suits their needs.
“My Department's central aim is to encourage a culture of lifelong learning and to equip people for work in a modern economy. Learndirect has a key role in this and I am delighted that this new centre in South Belfast is now operational and well placed to contribute to this aim.”
Learndirect is the network of on-line services being developed by UFI, the Government's flagship scheme for lifelong learning. Courses are completed on-line making delivery widely accessible, be it at home, in work or in a Learndirect centre. There are over 600 courses to choose from ranging from Personal Development, through the full spectrum of ICT applications to Business and Management courses.
By the end of the year 32 centres will be operational throughout Northern Ireland. Since the middle of last year when the first NI centre opened for business, around 6000 people in NI have undertaken 11,000 Learndirect courses. (AMcE)
