Stendhal Festival Announces Turin Brakes
The ill-fated Stendhal Festival of some years ago has returned, announcing acoustic duo Turin Brakes (pictured) as their headline act.
Taking place in Ballymully Cottage Farm in Limavady on August 20, the Stendhal Festival of Art promises "plays, some afternoon jazz, after dinner comedy, maybe a literary debate, early evening folk, rock, indie and much more".
In 2008, the festival was cancelled after facing opposition from members of Limavady's council who postponed the organiser's application, as the event would be taking place "on the Sabbath".
Other highlights of this year's festival include Swanee River, Andy Irvine and Derry band Intemission.
The festival's organisers have also announced they will be using an unusual "business model" to grow the event. It will be launched as a "not for profit vehicle" until the festival reaches a feasible when it will be restructured to a co-operative model, according to the festival's website.
The plan is that everyone involved in the first year will become a stakeholder in three years time. The festival will be benefiting five charities (MS Society, Parkinson’s, Foyle Hospice and two others), while funding regional arts programmes with colleges, community groups, Limavady Civic Centre and other artistic outlets.
Not only that, anyone attending the festival twice in the first three years - up to a limited amount – will become a member of the co-operative and thereafter get a free ticket to Stendhal for life.
