Hoax Bombs Uncovered In Cemetery Haul
Six hoax bombs have been uncovered during a security alert at the City Cemetery in Belfast.
Five of the devices were found in a pillow case and another near-by which saw part of the cemetery being closed during Tuesday's alert and one controlled explosion carried out by the Army.
Police have described the find as significant and said the devices were to be used in other areas to cause as much fear and disruption as possible.
DUP Policing Board member Robin Newton MLA has voiced his disgust at those responsible: "The PSNI described the find as significant and it is understood they were to be used in attacks in other locations," he said, today.
"The people of Northern Ireland have shown time and time again that they do not want to go back to the time of the Troubles and want NI to move forward to a peaceful and prosperous future."
Last Friday, the main cross city motorway link was cut for a time after fresh bomb alerts saw police investigating an abandoned vehicle that was left under the motorway bridge near Yorkgate in Belfast.
As a result of this alert, the M2, M3, York Road, Dock Street and the north bound carriageway of the Westlink were all closed to traffic.
Earlier, Stockmans Way off Stockmans Lane was closed off near to the M1 roundabout due to a report of a suspicious object.
The PSNI asked for the public to be vigilant following the series of security alerts - all hoaxes - totalling 14 incidents.
