Criticism levelled at women’s representation on Police Board
Women’s Coalition Assembly member Jane Morrice has expressed shock and outrage at the lack of gender balance on the Police Board following revelations that only two out of 19 Board positions will be taken up by women.
Deputy Speaker of the Assembly Jane Morrice has slammed the news that only two women have been appointed to the Board, despite 143 applications from women. She has said that those nominating should have tried harder to redress the gender balance on the Board.
Speaking on Wednesday 26 September, Ms Morrice said: “We are very concerned about the imbalance between men and women. The representation of women on the Board is simply not adequate.
“We have seen figures about the number of applications and short-listing, and they certainly do not point to a lack of interested and well-qualified women.
“A vital feature of the Board was that it was to be balanced and reflect the community. Great pains have been made to ensure a fair Nationalist/Unionist balance, and this is an important issue. However not enough has been put in to considering the gender balance on the Board which are just as important.”
She added: “The recruitment board’s failure to improve the representation of women and its tendency to give the political balance priority points to serious shortcomings in including women in political appointments.” (AMcE)
