Crumlin company unveils pioneering biochip technology
Randox Laboratories is to expand its workforce following the completion of development work on a pioneering medical diagnosis system.
Following the unveiling of the system marketed as Evidence, Randox is poised to take on 100 new employees, which will bring the number of individuals working on the new product to 280.
The Evidence system has been designed to detect and diagnose a wide range of diseases including cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
Almost a decade in research and development, at a cost of over £30 million, Evidence was premiered during Randox’s annual conference in the Waterfront Hall Belfast.
The company has already received numerous advance orders for the product, particularly from the US, although the technology is currently awaiting approval from the US Food and Drugs Agency (FDA).
The system is based on the concept of a ‘biochip’ that could revolutionise the way in which healthcare professionals utilise diagnostic technology. The biochip will enable high-speed testing for a variety of diseases based on the assessment of protein levels and the presence of specific disease markers, a one-stop-shop technique which has never been used before in a hospital laboratory situation.
The company currently employs around 500 people worldwide, with 380 of those based at Randox’s Crumlin facility in County Antrim. (CL)
